More than RM10,000 has been raised for the inaugural Lim Chong memorial chess tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (27 March), in honour of Lim Chong who died of a heart attack in November while returning from assignment.
Sheila Natarajan Rahman, who is co-ordinating matters with Lim Chong’s widow, Jan, said contributions have come from a host of Balai Berita alumni, friends and former colleagues, among them former Malay Mail journalists such as
R Nadeswaran (now special projects editor of The Sun),
former Malay Mail editor Chua Huck Cheng (now retired in New Zealand),
William & Helen D’Cruz,
IP Publications alumni such as
the Khoo Brothers: Derrik & Datuk Dan-E who were part of the founding team of Computimes, ITP-ians Cordelia and Debbie Leon,
Phua Eng Chye,
MBS schoolmates helmed by Jeffrey Lok,
and many others, including contributions from the Lim Family.

Eric Peris has donated a picture to be auctioned at the tournament (if there is time). Jan herself will be selling cupcakes and cookies on the day, and is raising funds for the tournament from her cake-making hobby.
A memorial booklet will be published, which will contain messages from friends and former colleagues. (Jan and Sheila will accept messages by email or SMS to Jan or Sheila up to Monday morning, March 28).
Lim Chong was noted for his lifelong interest in chess. He wrote a chess column for the Malay Mail, and was a leading light of the Malaysian chess fraternity.
He began in journalism as a reporter with the Malay Mail, and eventually became general manager of IT Publications, the NST subsidiary which published the Computimes section. On his retirement he joined Bernama as a sub-editor.
Contributions towards the cost of the tournament can be made through DAT Chess Centre. Jan Lim hopes to hold at least three memorial tournaments.
