No happy May 13th for Zubedy’s whitewash

Advertising man and motivational speaker Anas Zubedy’s happy-happy May 13th advertisement, promoting jolly feelings among Malaysians on this auspicious day, has been refused publication by most of the newspapers. Not so much for the happy-happy feelings he wants to promote, but for the touchy book he’s launching today, on the use of the word “Allah” in the Malay-language Bible.

The media were understandably hesitant and cautious, as the book launch comes in the midst of the running furore over the Umno-promoted campaign in Utusan Malaysia against Christianity. Anas’s ad combines his happy-happy May 13th message together with details of the touchy-touchy books, in English and Malay versions, which he says looks at what the Quran states about the use of the word “Allah” in the Bible. (A question waiting to be asked is, why should Christians be bound by what the Quran says, when the Bible itself predates Islam by 600 years?)

The Zubedy campaign for a happy-happy May 13th is a frighteningly Orwellian attempt to whitewash history by promoting national unity on this day, and ignoring the harsh reality of what happened in 1969.

The ad says: “Let’s recolour May 13, breathe new spirit into the date, dilute and eventually erase the negative thoughts and replace them with positive meanings and values”.

In other words, let’s just forget that Umno launched a bloody coup d’etat on May 13, 1969, aided and abetted by the security forces, and that all Malaysians have had to live under Umno’s thumb — with continual reminders of the bloody consequences if they don’t fall in line.

He should be delivering the message of goodwill to Ibrahim Ali and the monsters of Perkasa, and all the other ghouls who thrive on making threats about another May 13 — including, of course, Mahathir Mohamad.

Instead, he’s asking the ordinary people — the victims of Ketuanan Melayu, in other words, which also includes a lot of Malay people similarly victimised — to forgive the oppressor and be nice-nice. Just forget it la, he says. Don’t think bad things (which inevitably lead to bad things about Umno), and just be nice.

George Orwell’s characters in Animal Farm would be pleased with that: “Two legs good, four legs bad.”

Hi. Am glad to see that you’re one of the few who doesn’t buy into Zubedy’s PR hogwash.
