Prelude to oppression

When Private Adam of the Malaysian army fired off his M16 rifle in Chow Kit road in October 1987, he did so at a time of great tension in politics, as Umno rivals fought over the spoils of fortunes to come, and race relations (as usual) used as a weapon. It was to lead to Operation Lallang, the detention of more than 100 politicians, academics, religious figures and others. It was “round up the usual suspects” played large.

Amir Muhamad’s documentary drama of those days of tension will be screened at 8pm today, to launch the People’s Power Film Festival.
