Prelude to oppression

Mon 2011-Jul-4 @ +08 13:18:31 pm

When Private Adam of the Malaysian army fired off his M16 rifle in Chow Kit road in October 1987, he did so at a time of great tension in politics, as Umno rivals fought over the spoils of fortunes to come, and race relations (as usual) used as a weapon. It was to lead to Operation Lallang, the detention of more than 100 politicians, academics, religious figures and others. It was “round up the usual suspects” played large.

Amir Muhamad’s documentary drama of those days of tension will be screened at 8pm today, to launch the People’s Power Film Festival.

WHAT PRICE YOUR SOUL? – 040711

Just to safeguard their own ricebowls
some are prepared to sell their souls
forsaking their sacred pledges and vows
    and pretend to walk clean
    with their filty bare soles
