About 500 university students marched from Masjid Jamek through Chow Kit to Umno’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today in a lively protest demanding greater academic freedom. The protest coincided with a roundtable discussion on the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA). Students say the act has “killed student activism in Malaysia”.

Along the way, the marchers chanted slogans and the procession gathered steam as their numbers swelled. The peaceful demonstration, by the Bebas student coalition, succeeded in handing a memorandum of their demands to Saifuddin Abdullah, deputy higher education minister and also to Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) commissioner Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah. » MalaysiaKini

this is good. we should organise protests every weekend and see how long they can keep cutting off prime space from use.
