Zunar’s cartoon mag seized

Gedung Kartun (Cartoon Warehouse) a new satirical political cartoon magazine by Zunar has been seized in advance of its launch on Sept 1 — “primarily” because it lacked a publication permit as well as for content “checking”, according to a KDN official contacted by the Centre for Independent Journalism.

The CIJ and the Writers’ Alliance for Media Independence in a joint statement condemned the seizure. “The confiscation smacks of harassment and censorship of discussion of current issues,” they said.

The inaugural issue takes on the hot topics of “Mongolia”, “Altantunya” (Magic Words That Must Not Be Said), and pokes fun of 1Najib and 1Rosmah (They Who Must Be Revered. Not!). There are also pages on Anwar Ibrahim’s black eye, and Teoh Beng Hock, according to images available on the web.

Gedung Kartun also has a Facebook page of its own where you can sign up as a friend.
