Who would waste money to build this?

Putrajaya

I mean … [building a] new capital from ground zero, what I ask myself [is], what rational government would do this?

Lee Kuan Yew in 2008, speaking about
the (“stupid, dense”) Burmese junta building a new capital

Putrajaya

No, this one is Putrajaya, founded 1993. Which rational government would do this?

  1. Someone with a huge Ego, with full powers, and overwhelmed by money gushing out from the earth.

Imagine all those money saved for the future, like the Norwegians, we could have done better than Singapore.

What we have are icons of development: tallest twin towers, F1 Circuit, beautiful university campuses, and anything which would impress first time visitors. But we are facing brain drain problem. This means we are not doing well in management of human capital, the most important resource in a country. It is like a family inheriting a huge amount of money, spending wastefully instead of investing in education and managing their finance to ensure recurring income and capital growth.

It would have been a great joke but when we see fellow citizens in dire straits while some could become very rich just because they were on the gravy train. Something is very wrong in our country.

  2. You ask who would build Putrajaya ?
It has to be a brainchild of shenanigan Mahathir.
The shenanigan Mahathir says anything is possible, not only building Putrajaya, just look around K.L. what a bloody mess the entire city is. There is no provisions for proper roads, greenery, playgrounds and drainage, just to name only a few essentials for a city. A truly city-planner’s nightmare it is !
The truth is, it is one of the worst if not the worst cities around the region and that is why the constant traffic jam and the many floods whenever it rains.
Also that is why even though having spent so much Malaysia is still in the third world. What more it is about to go bankrupt in a few more years and for once a Ketuanan Minister is right in predicting that !
But one thing for sure, the huge ‘commissions’, as intended, that goes with these white elephants were most appropriate .
I bet my life on it that they must have been planned and built by mostly Malaysia trained Ketuanan Melayu architects and cheap and untrained foreigner workers. Of course this does not include the foreign non Ketuanan Melayu architects of Twin Towers.
The nightmares will continue to haunt us for a long long time even after shenanigan Mahathir is gone. A most befitting memorabilia for a truly shenanigan !

  3. I think the guy who designed Putrajaya was in the middle of a Sim City game when he thought of the idea. Especially the type who builds all the stuff first and waits for the people to move in.
